A devout Krishna Bhaktha, Meerabai is a princess turned poetess of 16th C. of North India, who sacrificed everything in her life for Lord Krishna. The thought of Meerabai brings to one's mind, a beautiful image clad in white, with an Ektar in hand, dancing in ecstasy or singing the glories of Lord Krishna in a serene seated posture Born in a Rajput family of Rajasthan, Meera who was emotionally wedded to a Krishna idol, was given in marriage to Prince Bhojraj of Chitod. Early widowhood led Meera to spend the rest of her life in devotion to Lord Krishna. She is sometimes acclaimed as the first feminist who broke away from the bonds of tradition, rigid social and religious customs and sought absolute freedom. Meera's poetry was a natural expression and a spontaneous outburst of her intense longing for the lord. Fervent with madhura bhakthi or prema (divine love), Meera's innumerable compositions were called bhajan-kirtans that were tuned to a rich variety of ragas. Her songs that linger on include Karuna Suno Jogi mat ja Mereto Giridhar Gopal among many others. She is often said to symbolize Andal of the Alwar tradition or the Gopikas of Brindavan and is believed to have composed most of her bhajans at Brindavan and Dwaraka. According to legends, Meera was absorbed into the icon of Lord Krishna at the temple in Dwaraka in about 1546.
